Short-termism is a way of thinking that only cares about now — this season's numbers, this year's vote, this month's profit — and does not worry much about later. A company that cuts training to look richer this quarter, a government that builds something flashy before an election but leaves a mess, a student who only crams the night before and never really learns: that is the shape of it. People use the word as a criticism. Nobody says I believe in short-termism proudly; they accuse others of it. Though actually, everyone has to think about the short term a little — rent is due, after all. The complaint is when now eats later. You will meet it in newspapers, business, and politics more than in kitchen talk. In ordinary English people more often say they are only thinking about the short term, or that is short-sighted.
