A shoot-out is a fight in which people fire guns at each other. It is usually short and sudden — a street, a bank door, a scene in a film — not a long war. News readers and film talk use the word a lot. A judge in court would more likely say the people shot at each other, or name the crime in careful legal words. You may see it with a (shoot-out) or as one word (shootout); British writing often keeps the . Though actually, the same spelling is used for a completely different thing in football: a penalty shoot-out, where players take turns to kick at the goal after a drawn match. No guns there at all.
