A shindig is a noisy party — a lively gathering with a lot of sound and fuss. News writers are especially fond of it: they will call a political celebration, a wedding blow-out, or a celebrity party a shindig, a little , a little colourful. It is informal. You would not put it in a serious letter or a school essay unless you wanted that playful tone. It suggests noise and a crowd more than a quiet dinner for four. Nobody is quite sure where the word came from; it may be an altered form of shindy, or it may come from a Scottish word for a jump or leap. Either way, in English now it is a party word, not a word for a fight, even though older shindy could wander that way.
組成來源不確定。一種說法是從 shindy 變來的；另一種是來自蘇格蘭蓋爾語 sìnteag（跳、躍）。兩種都只是「可能」，不要講成已證實。
