    If someone looks at you shiftily, they look as if they have something to hide. Their eyes slide away; they might smile too quickly, or keep at the door. It is the adverb from , so it tells you how a person looks or acts, not what they are. A child who has eaten the last might answer shiftily; a person who is lying in a film often speaks shiftily. It is informal and a little — you are judging their face. It does not mean they are moving from place to place. That would be shifting.
