Shiatsu is a Japanese kind of massage. The person giving it presses and holds points on your body, mostly with thumbs and fingers, along paths they believe energy follows. It is not the same as a Western massage that mainly rubs and kneads the muscles, and it is not quite the same as Chinese 推拿, though the idea of pressing points will feel familiar if you have had that. People go for shiatsu because their shoulders are tight, or they want to relax; some also believe it helps the body in a deeper way, though that is a belief, not something every doctor would sign. You will see it on spa menus. In English we borrowed the Japanese word as it is. It is a countable noun: a shiatsu, a shiatsu session.
