Sherry is a strong wine that first came from the town of Jerez in southern Spain. It can be pale and dry, or dark and sweet, but it is always stronger than ordinary table wine, because extra alcohol is added. In Britain people often drink a small glass before a meal, or cook with it; cream sherry is the sweet kind you might meet at Christmas. It is a slightly old-fashioned, grown-up drink — you would not usually order it in a student bar. The English name is a , slightly mixed-up form of the old Spanish name for Jerez.
