A Sherpa is a person from a Himalayan people whose home is in the high mountains of Nepal, especially around . Sherpas have long been hired as guides and porters on climbing trips: they know the paths, the weather, and how to carry heavy loads high up. Write it with a capital S when you mean the people. Though actually English speakers sometimes stretch sherpa to mean any who guides you through something hard, even a meeting. That use is informal, and some Sherpas dislike it, because it turns a people into a job title.

組成From Tibetan ཤར་པ། (shar pa), literally 'eastern people': ཤར (shar, 'east') + པ (pa, a suffix that makes a person-word). A common explanation is that the Sherpas came from eastern Tibet; the community now lives in the highlands of Nepal, south of Tibet. Why the name was formed this way is not fully clear.
