Shenanigans are naughty tricks or slightly dishonest behaviour that people do not treat as a real crime. Children hiding a friend's bag, a politician bending a small rule, a company playing cute with the numbers — all of that can be called shenanigans. The word is informal and often a bit , even fond: you are rolling your eyes, not calling the police. Though actually it is almost always used in the plural; 'a shenanigan' sounds odd to many ears. You would not use it for violence or a serious theft — that would sound too light, as if you were making a joke of something that is not a joke.
