1. 1

Shenandoah is the name of a river and of the long valley it runs through, in northwest Virginia in the eastern United States. The valley is known for farms, autumn colour, and a wide, open look. Shenandoah National Park sits in the Blue Ridge Mountains beside it; it covers about 300 square miles of forest, and a road called Drive runs along the ridge so you can look down on the valley. Older Americans also know the folk song 'Oh Shenandoah,' which made the name feel warm and even to people who have never been there. It is a place name, so it keeps a capital S.
