1. 1

The shekel is the standard money of Israel — the unit you pay with there, as Taiwan uses the new Taiwan dollar. The modern currency is often called the new shekel. The name is much older than the modern state: it began as a word for weighing, then a set weight of metal used as money, and now it is the name on the coins and notes. Though actually, in or slightly old-fashioned English you may hear “shekels” for money in general (“I haven’t got the shekels”), a bit like saying cash; that is loose talk, not how you name the Israeli currency in a news story, and not a word for 新台幣. In anything about Israel, shekel means that country’s money.
