A shebeen is a place that sells alcoholic drinks without a proper licence — not a normal pub, but someone’s house, a back room, or a quiet spot where drink is poured on the side. The word is especially Irish, though you also meet it in Scottish, South African, and Caribbean English. It can sound warm and local, or a bit looking-down, depending on who says it and why: for some it is community and cheap drink; for the law it is simply illegal. Though actually, the tidy picture “secret bar” is tidier than life. A shebeen might be a kitchen table and a few bottles, not a hidden nightclub.
