Shavian means connected with George Bernard Shaw, the Irish writer of plays (Pygmalion is the famous one). A Shavian joke, a Shavian idea, Shavian wit — these sound like him, or belong to the study of his work. The word can also name a person who follows Shaw’s thinking (a Shavian), and there is a Shavian alphabet: a special way of writing English sounds that Shaw wanted, though almost nobody uses it day to day. This is learned English for books, theatre notes, and literature class, not night-market talk. Say it SHAY-vee-ən, not “Shaw-vian”. It is always tied to that one writer; it is not a general word for Irish, and it has nothing to do with a shawl.
