    Shatterproof describes glass (and some plastic) made so that if it breaks, it does not fly into long, sharp pieces that cut you. Car windows, some phone screens, some shower doors are made this way. The glass can still crack. Shatterproof is not the same as . It is about how it fails: it holds together, or it breaks into dull , instead of daggers. The word is shatter + -proof. Shatter means break into many pieces with force. Proof here is the same piece as in waterproof: it keeps that thing from doing its worst. Waterproof keeps water out; shatterproof keeps shattering from filling the room with knives.
