Sharia is a system of religious laws that Muslims follow. It is not one thin book of 'do this, do that'. It grows out of the Qur'an, from what Muslims believe the Prophet Muhammad said and did, and from many years of scholars talking about how to live a good life before God. It can cover prayer, food, family, money, and, in some places, crime.

ShariaShariais a system of religious laws是一套宗教法律that Muslims follow,是穆斯林所遵循的。It is not one thin book of 'do this, do that'它不是一本薄薄的「這個要做、那個要做」的小冊子。It grows out of the Qur'an它源自於古蘭經from what Muslims believe the Prophet Muhammad said and did,也源自穆斯林相信先知穆罕默德所說所做的事and from many years of scholars talking about how to live a good life before God,還有多年來學者們討論如何在神面前過美好生活所累積的成果。It can cover prayer, food, family, money它可以涵蓋禱告、飲食、家庭、金錢and, in some places, crime,在有些地方甚至包括犯罪。

Though actually, English news often uses sharia as if it were one harsh criminal code used the same way everywhere. That is tidier than the truth.

Though actually不過,English news often uses sharia英文新聞常常把sharia講得as if it were one harsh criminal code used the same way everywhere好像是一套嚴苛的刑法、在每個地方都用同一種方式執行。That is tidier than the truth這樣講比事實整齊多了。

How it is used depends on the country and the community. In some countries, courts apply parts of it. In many others it is mainly about worship, diet, and family life, and the national law is something else. Muslims themselves do not all agree on what it asks of people today.

How it is used depends on the country and the community怎麼用要看國家和社群而定。In some countries, courts apply parts of it有些國家的法院會採用其中一部分。In many others it is mainly about worship, diet, and family life在許多其他國家,它主要只涉及敬拜、飲食和家庭生活and the national law is something else,國家的法律則是另一回事。Muslims themselves do not all agree on what it asks of people today就連穆斯林自己,對於它今天要求人們做到什麼,也不是完全一致。

The word is formal. You meet it in news, school, and serious talk about religion and law — not in light chat.
