A share-out is when something — especially money or property — is divided among two or more people. It can also mean the amount each person gets when that happens. You hear it in British English, in news about a will, a company payout, or friends splitting a prize. It comes from the phrasal verb share out: they shared the money out, and the share-out was equal. Though actually, Americans more often say a split, a payout, or just how the money was shared. The hyphen marks it as a noun; the everyday verb is still share out, two words.
