The Shannon is a river in the Republic of Ireland. It is the country’s longest river. It runs through the middle of the island and meets the Atlantic Ocean near the city of , in a wide mouth of water. Maps, weather reports, and Irish people say “the Shannon”; it is the great river of the country, not a small stream. Though actually, you will also meet Shannon as a person’s given name, and as the name of an airport and a region by that river mouth — those uses grew from the river. This entry is the water itself.
