Shangri-La is a beautiful place that exists in a story: a hidden valley where life is peaceful and people stay happy for a very long time. The name comes from the 1933 book Lost Horizon by James Hilton, who set that valley in Tibet. People now use Shangri-La for any far-away place that feels too perfect — a quiet island, a mountain town, even a garden that makes you forget the city. Though actually, Hilton used it as a made-up name in the book; a Tibetan origin has been suggested — zhang (a district), ri (mountain), la (a mountain pass), so “mountain pass of Zhang” — but that is a suggestion, not a sure history. You will also see Shangri-La on fancy hotels. That is the dream-name borrowed for business, not a real valley you can fly to.
