Shane is a 1953 American Western — a cowboy film set in the old West — that many people still name among the best ever made. Shane is a quiet stranger, very good with a gun, who wishes he could live another kind of life. He rides into a Wyoming valley in 1889 and stays with a farming family. A rich cattle man wants the valley for his animals and tries to push the farmers off their land. Shane tries not to use his gun, but he is pulled back into fighting in order to protect them. A little boy looks up to him, and at the end Shane rides away while the boy calls after him. Though actually, Shane is hurt in that last fight, and some viewers think he may be riding away to die; the film never says so in words. The story is slow and sad, and famous for that goodbye. Write it with a capital S: it is a title. Shane is also a man’s name in real life; this entry is the film.
