A shandy is a drink made by mixing beer with lemonade, and a shandy can also mean a glass of that drink. It is a light pub drink, more at home in Britain, Ireland, and places that follow British pub habits. It is weaker than a full beer, so people order it when they want the beer taste without so much strength, or when the weather is hot. Though actually, the “lemonade” in a British shandy is not the still lemon juice a student usually pictures. In Britain, lemonade is usually a fizzy lemon soda, closer to 檸檬汽水 than to 檸檬汁. You mix beer with that. The older full name is shandygaff; shandy is the short everyday word. It is informal. The United States does not use the word much. In Taiwan you are more likely to see a German-style Radler, which is the same kind of idea: beer plus lemon soda.
