A shamrock is a small plant with three green leaves on each stem. It is the plant people think of as Ireland’s national symbol: you see it on cards, sports shirts, and pub signs, and people wear a little piece of it on St Patrick’s Day. It is a kind of clover. The lucky four-leaf clover is a different joke — the shamrock of the symbol has three leaves. Though actually, Irish official marks often use a harp; the shamrock is the living badge people wear and draw. Which wild plant is “the” shamrock is not fully agreed: many say white clover, and some families have long picked wood instead. The name is Irish. It does not mean sham + rock.
組成From Irish seamróg, a smaller form of semar / semair, “clover”, from Old Irish semróc. English borrowed the Irish word. It is related to Old Norse smári, also a clover word; that is not an English family member.
