A shammy is a soft piece of leather used for cleaning or polishing — cars, windows, glass. It drinks up water and leaves less of a mark than an ordinary cloth. The older kind was chamois leather, from a mountain animal; many shammies now are sheepskin or a fake material made to feel the same. People also write chamois, but in English they often still say it like “shammy”, so this spelling is just that sound written down. Though actually, you can use it as a verb too: to shammy a window is to wipe it with one. It is a home-and-garage word, not an essay word. In shops the pack may say chamois while people at the sink still ask for the shammy.
