A shamefaced person looks as if they know they have done something wrong. The feeling sits on the face: the eyes drop, the mouth goes small, and the whole body wants to take up less room. You use it when the shame is visible in that moment — a child caught lying, a friend who forgot your birthday and now stands in the doorway. It is a little old-fashioned and more at home in stories than in text messages, but people still understand it at once. It describes how someone looks and feels right then, not a lasting character. A person shows no shame. A shamefaced person shows it clearly. Ashamed is the everyday cousin; shamefaced adds the picture of the face.

組成Today it feels like shame + faced (“a face full of shame”), and that is how we hear it. The older form was shamefast — shame + fast in the old sense “held firm” — meaning modest, held back by shame. People reshaped the second half to faced because that made more sense to the ear.
