    Shalom is a Hebrew word. At heart it means peace — not only “no fighting,” but that a person or a community is well, whole, and at rest. Jewish people use it as a greeting: hello, and also goodbye, the way works in Italian. You will hear it in Israel, in , and in English when someone wants that greeting on purpose. It can also sit as a noun: to wish someone shalom is to wish them peace. It is borrowed Hebrew, not English slang, so it often keeps a capital S in the greeting. Arabic salaam is the same old “peace” word that travelled through Arabic instead of Hebrew — that is why they sound alike. Though actually, saying Shalom in English can feel marked: you are using a Jewish or Hebrew greeting, not a neutral hi.
