1. 1

Shagpile is a thick carpet whose surface is long and hairy, like a soft coat on the floor. Another name for that carpet is just shag. Pile here is the carpet-maker's word for the upright threads you walk on, not a heap of things. In the 1960s and 1970s shagpile was fashionable in living rooms; some people still love the warm, slightly old-fashioned feel, and some think it looks dated and holds dust. The name is British-flavoured. American English more often says shag carpet. You are not likely to need it in a test, but you will meet it in house descriptions and in jokes about old furniture. It is one carpet with a deep surface, not a pile of carpets.
