Seville is a city in southwest Spain. People know it for old palaces and churches, for strong heat, for oranges, and for music. The Alcázar is the palace-castle often pointed to: Muslim rulers (the Moors) held the city from 712 to 1248, and that history is still in the stones — courtyards, tiles, water, shade. Later Christian kings added rooms of their own, so the building is a layered story, not one clean style. Seville is also famous for the slow, crowded walks of Holy Week, and for a kind of Spanish song and dance, though actually that music belongs to a wider south, not only this one city. In English we say Seville; in Spanish the same city is Sevilla. The bitter oranges used in British orange jam are Seville oranges, named after the place.
