The Severn is a long river in Britain. It rises in the mountains of Wales and runs through southwest England until it meets the sea in the Bristol Channel. It is the longest river in the United Kingdom, though actually many visitors only know the name from the Severn Bridge, which carries the road from England into South Wales. Near the mouth the tide can rush up the river in a wall of water called the Severn Bore — people even ride boards on it. In Welsh the same river is Hafren. You say the Severn or the River Severn. It is a place name, so it takes a capital S; it is not a kind of thing you can have two of in the same way as “a river.”
