Seventeenth is how we say 17th in words — not the counting number seventeen (17), but the place in a line, a date, or a list. If you are the seventeenth person through the door, sixteen people came before you. We write it 17th. You meet it on birthday cakes, in , and in dates (“the seventeenth of May”). History books talk about the seventeenth century: that is the 1600s (1601–1700), though actually many students hear “seventeen” and think of the 1700s — that would be the eighteenth century. The word can also mean a thin slice of a whole: a seventeenth is one of seventeen equal parts. It is an ordinary word; the only trick is not to mix it up with seventeen itself.
