Sesame is a plant grown in hot countries for its tiny flat seeds and for the oil pressed from them. The pale seeds turn up on buns, on sushi, and in 芝麻包; black seeds are common in East Asian cooking too. The oil has a strong nutty smell: in Taiwan you often add a little at the end of a dish, or use it in 麻油雞, rather than as an everyday frying oil. A paste of the ground seeds is tahini. People also know the fairy-tale shout 'Open sesame!' from Ali Baba, as if the word could open a door — that is a story phrase, not a meaning of the plant. Ordinary, slightly kitchen-and-biology English.
