Serried means standing very close together, in rows, with almost no gap. You meet it most in writing, not in the street: serried ranks of soldiers, serried rows of chairs. The picture is of things packed so tight they look like one solid block of lines. It is a rather old, word. A newspaper or a history book might use it for a crowd or a formation; friends talking would just say packed or lined up close. Though actually, it almost always wants that extra idea of rows — not a messy crush, but an ordered one.
組成This probably comes from French serré, “pressed close.”
