SERPS was a British government pension, not a Taiwan one. The letters stand for State Earnings-Related Pension Scheme. On top of the basic state pension, it paid extra money after you stopped work because of age. How much you got depended on how much you had earned — and paid in — while you were working. Britain replaced it in 2002 with the State Second Pension, which gave more help to people with low or middle incomes. You will mainly meet SERPS in older UK papers, or when someone talks about pension rights they built up before 2002. It is official language, not a daily word here.
