Serge is a strong cloth, usually wool, with a weave — you can see faint diagonal lines on it. Tailors have long used it for suits, trousers, uniforms, and coats because it wears well and holds a shape. It is a workshop word more than a street word: you will hear it from people who or sell fabric. Though actually, the name’s story is sideways. It comes, far back, from a Greek word for silk (the ), and English silk is a distant of the same old name. Today serge is typically wool, not silk; the name travelled farther than the fibre. When someone says a serge suit, they mean this sturdy cloth, not a sudden rush of water (that is surge) and not an army rank (that is sergeant). Those only sound .
