    Serene means very calm and peaceful — the still, clear kind of calm, not heavy or sleepy. You can call a lake serene, a morning serene, a face serene. The Latin word it comes from, serē, first talked about weather: a sky with no clouds, nothing troubling the air. That picture is still inside the English word. When we say a person looks serene, we mean their face is untroubled, like that open sky. It is a gentle, slightly formal word; you would not usually shout it. It is stronger and stiller than just calm: calm can be a short moment, but serene feels settled all the way through. Though actually, it also lived in old titles — Serene Highness was a way to address some princes — as if rank itself should feel high and . In ordinary talk today we almost always keep the peaceful meaning.
