A sequin is a tiny, flat, shiny disc, usually plastic or metal, sewn onto clothes so they catch the light. Dancers’ dresses, party tops, and festival costumes are often covered in them. One sequin is almost nothing; a thousand of them make a surface that sparkles when the person moves. People also use sequin as a verb — to sequin a dress — meaning to these little discs on, but the main word is the little shiny piece itself. It is an everyday fashion word, a little glamorous, not technical. It has nothing to do with a sequence (an order of things), even though the English spellings sit close together.
組成Borrowed from French sequin, from Italian zecchino, from zecca, “mint” (the place that makes coins), from Arabic sikka, “die for coining; coin.” It is a doublet of zecchin, an old gold coin: the decoration is named after something that shone like money.
