A sepulchre is a place made for a dead body — not just a hole in the earth, but a small room or a little building, often of stone, where people used to lay someone to rest. You meet it in the Bible, in old stories, and in rather formal writing. Everyday English is more likely to say tomb or grave. The Holy Sepulchre is the name Christians give to the tomb in Jerusalem where they believe Jesus was laid. Writers sometimes stretch the word in a dark, poetic way for anywhere that feels like a tomb: a cold empty hall, a silent house. There is also a very old verb, to sepulchre someone, meaning to put them in a tomb, but almost nobody uses that now. British spelling keeps the -chre; American spelling is often sepulcher. It feels literary and a little church-like, not a shop-and-street word.
