A sepal is one of the small leaf-like parts that sit directly under a flower. While the flower is still a bud, the sepals often wrap around it and help protect it. When the flower opens, the sepals usually stay at the base, under the coloured . Scientists and garden books use this word; in daily talk people may just point to “the little green leaves under the flower.” A flower has more than one sepal. Though actually, sepals are not always green — in some flowers they are as colourful as the — but they are still the parts in that outer ring under the bloom.
