Sentimentality is the quality of being sentimental: that extra softness of feeling, often more than the facts can carry. A speech can have sentimentality; a film can drown in it. The word is a noun for the flavour, not for the person. People usually say it with a little — too sweet, too , not quite true — though you can admit to a bit of sentimentality without shame, the way you admit to keeping an old ticket stub. Though actually, in music history there is also a narrower use, copying German Empfindsamkeit, for a tender, feeling style; that is specialist talk, not what most need first. In ordinary English, if you mention someone’s sentimentality, you are naming the softness itself, the quality sitting on the work or the mood.
