A sentimentalist is a person who behaves or writes in a sentimental way: they lean on tender feeling, tears, and sweet memories, and they may skip what is harsh or mixed. Critics use it when they think someone is soft-headed about the past, or when a writer makes every scene a chance to cry. It can be almost fond — “I’m just a sentimentalist about Christmas” — but in reviews it is often a shove: this person is not seeing clearly. Though actually, being a sentimentalist is about what you trust (feeling) as much as about being “too emotional.” Compare sentimentalism, which is the habit or style; this word is the someone.
