Senescent means becoming old and showing the effects of getting older. It is the adjective that sits beside senescence. A senescent cell has stopped dividing. A senescent tree is past its strong years. Writers also stretch it to companies or industries that are old and , though that use is a metaphor and a little literary. The word is formal and scientific. It describes a stage, not a moral failing, and it is not the same as senile, which in everyday talk points at a confused mind. You would not call a senescent; you might read it in a biology paper.
