Semiotic is an adjective about signs — not only road signs, but anything that stands for something else: a word, a photo, a uniform, an , the red of a sale sticker. Semiotics (an older French-leaning name is semiology) is the study of how those signs make meaning. A semiotic reading of an asks what the lighting, poses, and logos are quietly saying, beyond the slogan. It is university talk, a little pleased with itself; you will not hear it at the night market. Though actually, the spelling is a trap. This is not semi- as in “half”. It comes from a Greek word sêma, meaning a mark or sign. School words like semantic (about meaning in language) grow from that same Greek root, which is a real family, not a story people invented. If you only remember one thing: semiotic means “about signs”, never “half of something”.
