    A semi-professional sports player, musician, or actor gets paid for the sport or the art, but it is not their main job. They may play in a lower league for a fee, take money for a wedding gig, then go back to an office on Monday. It is an adjective, and also a noun: she is a semi-professional. Sports pages use it a lot. Though actually, the line is messy. Some semi-professionals train almost like full professionals; some get only a little money. The word is about pay and time, not about whether the playing is “good enough.” Do not hear it as a polite way to say “a bit amateur” or “not very skilled.” That is a different complaint (). Semi-professional means part of your living comes from it, but not the whole living.
