A semi- house is joined to one other house on one side, and open on the other. Two homes share one wall, like twins. Each has its own front door, and usually a bit of garden on the free side.
This is everyday British housing talk, not a fancy word. People even it to a semi: “They bought a semi.” A house stands alone. A house (a row house) is joined on both sides. Though actually, from the street a semi- pair can look like one big house cut down the middle — because that is close to what it is.
Americans more often say for two homes sharing a building, but that word can also mean one home upstairs and one downstairs. If you are reading a UK story, semi- is the side-by-side pair.
