Semen is the thick, usually whitish liquid that comes out of the male sex organs. It carries sperm — the tiny cells that can join with an egg and start a baby. Men and male animals produce it. Doctors, science teachers, and biology books use this word. It is the proper name, not a joke and not street slang, though some people still laugh because the topic feels private. That laugh is about the topic, not because the word is “bad English.” You will also hear sperm used loosely for the whole liquid. Though actually, sperm are the swimming cells inside; semen is the liquid that carries them. In a lab the two words are kept apart. In everyday talk they sometimes get mixed. We do not say “a semen” in ordinary speech; we just say semen, or a sample of semen.
