Self-styled means you have given yourself a title or a position, without a real right to it. The word shows . A self-styled expert has named themselves an expert; a self-styled leader has claimed the chair. Other people have not clearly given them that name, or the name is bigger than what they have earned. You put it before the title: a self-styled king, a self-styled coach. Though actually, the person may truly believe the title — the word still says the rest of us need not accept it. It is not about clothes or “having style.” It is about a name you pinned on yourself.
