Self-regulatory describes a system, industry, or organization that controls itself, rather than having an independent body or a set of laws standing outside it to make sure the rules are obeyed. A self-regulatory organization codes of practice, takes complaints, and sometimes fines its members, without waiting for a new law. The adjective often sits in front of organization, framework, or industry. It carries the same political argument as the noun self-regulation: some people hear responsibility, others hear a . Though actually, it does not describe a calm person. For someone who controls their temper, English prefers self-controlled, or, in psychology, self-regulating. Self-regulatory is the institutional word.
