A self-proclaimed expert, leader, or king is someone who gave themselves that title. Nobody voted, hired, or crowned them. English almost always uses this with a raised : it shows . The speaker is saying they claim this, but I am not so sure, and neither are the rest of us. Though actually, the person may truly have the skill; the sting is in the claiming, not always in a lie. Compare self-described, which is cooler and fairer: it only reports how they name themselves. Self-proclaimed is the sharper tool. You will hear it in news, reviews, and arguments. It is not a word you pin on a friend you respect, unless you are teasing.
