Self-harm is physical harm that a person does to their own body on purpose — for example cutting the skin. It is not an accident, and it is not the same as getting hurt in sport. People may do it when feelings are too heavy to hold. Doctors, teachers, and news writers use this as a serious health word. It works as a noun (self-harm) and as a verb (to self-harm). Though actually, some people stretch it to any way of treating yourself badly, such as skipping meals or talking to yourself; the core sense here is physical. This is not a joke, and it is not a word to throw at a friend. If this is close to your life, telling a trusted adult or getting medical help is a brave next step, not a small one.
