This is a way of learning, mostly in language schools and colleges, where you are not sitting in a class being taught the same lesson as everyone else. You choose your own books, recordings, and exercises, and you work on your own — often in a room set up for that, a self-access centre. The idea is that you know what you need, so you pick. It is a teachers' and course-designers' word more than a street word; students might just say they are studying by themselves. Though actually, it is not simply 'homework alone': the point is choice of materials, and a place or system that lets you do that. You will see it on school websites and in (English-language teaching) talk, especially British English.
