This is an old, rather severe word for — touching your own body for sexual pleasure. People used it when they wanted to show they thought the act was wrong, dirty, or even harmful, as if you were treating yourself badly on purpose. You will mostly meet it in older books, religious writing, or when someone is being mock-formal and . Though actually, ordinary English today almost never uses it; people say , or a more casual word, and they usually do not load it with shame. Do not mix it up with hurting your own body on purpose: that is self-harm, a different and serious matter. The 'abuse' here is moral language from a time when many adults taught that this was a vice.
