SEGA is a Japanese company that makes computer and video games. For years it also made the machines you play them on. Its most famous character is Sonic the Hedgehog — a blue hedgehog who runs very fast. Older players remember the Mega Drive (called Genesis in the United States), the tall shop machines you stand at, and later the Dreamcast. People write SEGA in capital letters, or Sega with a capital S. In speech many English speakers say SAY-guh. It is a company name, not a general word for “a game box”: a Nintendo or a PlayStation is not a SEGA. Though actually, SEGA still makes games, but it no longer fights the others with its own home machine the way it did in the 1990s. In Taiwan the company name is 世嘉, and Sonic is 音速小子 — not the mainland name 索尼克.
