A seer is someone said to see into the future and say what will happen — a prophet, a fortune-teller, a visionary in old stories and holy books. It is a slightly literary or biblical word. In everyday English people more often say fortune-teller, psychic, or prophet, depending on whether they mean a shop-front reader, a mystic, or a religious figure. Built as see + -er, “one who sees,” but this sense is not “a person with working eyes.” It is someone believed to see what has not happened yet, or a hidden truth. Pronounce it with two beats, like see-er, not like sear (to burn meat in a pan). Though actually, in very old or poetic use a seer can also be simply “one who sees a vision”; the future-telling sense is the one meet in stories.
組成see + -er (the person who does it). Here, one who “sees” what is coming, not merely one who uses their eyes.
